Wushu today has changed a lot from the days of Jet Li, Yu Shaowen, Patti Li, and Yen Wen Qing. Back in the day, instructors emphasized basics and basics made up a form, but today wushu has gone more into leaping. The Butterfly Twist, the Aerial, the 540 Tornado Kick, and the Drill Kick are all must have¡®s in Contemporary Wushu.
Though Wushu is not very common, it is growing in popularity in the World, due to the explosion of popular martial arts movies and superstars. To name a few, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Bruce Lee have all contributed to the popularity of Chinese Martial Arts. Movies such as The Matrix, Romeo Must Die, The One, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon have all combined classic Wushu moves with special effects to create a fairy tale like setting to heighten the capabilities of Wushu in movies.
With the occurance of these events, there is a greater chance for the acceptance of Wushu as an Olympic Medal Event in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. This would be great for the development of martial arts as a whole. |
