Wushu is a burgeoning sport in Singapore and several other East Asia countries. In Singapore, its status was raised dramatically after the nation's athletes won seven gold medals at the South-east Asian Games in 1993. When the Singapore National Wushu Federation (SNWF) was formed as an umbrella body for various pugilistic bodies in 1967, there were only 19 members. Today, the federation has more than 300 members.
Wushu has also gone through several changes in Singapore. For example, it has moved away from being a senior citizens' sport to one for the young as well. It has also moved away from its long-time association with the Chinese educated to include those from other ethnic groups such as Malays and Indians.
